French Riviera Mougins

Featured Story
About Mougins, France

One of the most notable places along the French Riviera is the commune of Mougins. Located just outside of Cannes, this town has long been known as a refuge for artists. Lush trees and plant life give the town a radiant glow of green. Serenity and simplicity define the nature of Mougins.

History of Mougins

The earliest trace of human inhabitants dates back to the 1st century, when the Ligurians settled in the area. These inhabitants were eventually expelled from the area during the Roman Empire to make room for a new staging post. The village saw expansion during the Middle Ages. Mougins became a winter getaway for wealthy travelers during the 19th century. Artists soon began flocking to the area as well.

Picasso in Mougins

Pablo Picasso, one of the most renowned artists of the 20th century, resided in a farmhouse in Mougins during the last few years of his life. The farmhouse was situated atop Notre-Dame-de-Vie, a famous hill overlooking the main town. He passed away on April 8, 1973 while hosting a dinner party along with his wife in his home.

Notable Mougins' Attractions

Beautiful artworks, including many pieces from Picasso, are displayed inside the Mougins Museum of Classical Art. The Museum of Photography André Villers displays many photographs of Picasso and other notable figures. The 11th century Church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur is one of the town’s oldest structures.

Mougins offers culture and history in addition to its quiet atmosphere. The town is the perfect solution for travelers who are looking for an experience with a slower pace.
